Posts Coming Soon!

January 12th, 2012

I LIVE!

Kids are back in school, company is gone, and guild quilt show submissions are in. Time to come up for air! I have been so buried, I didn't even realize that I never posted December's Block of the Month. Rest assured, that oversight will soon be corrected. There are several posts coming in the next week. There will be December & January's quilt blocks, one more method of running a Round Robin that I just learned tonight, and pictures of ours. Stay tuned, should be fun!

Area Round Robins

Area Round Robins

The starter can create a larger block than participants (ex. 15" starter block and 10" participant block plus seam allowance) or make the same size as participants. Participants make one or two blocks worth of area depending on the groups choice. Starter will then arrange and fill in as needed with completed blocks at the end. Starter will specify smallest grid increment. In this example, that increment is 5". All blocks will require a 1/4" seam allowance added to all sides.

Example:

1 -  10" block   OR

4 - 5" blocks   OR

2 - 5" x 10" blocks   OR

1 - 5" x 20" block or any combo

So if the chosen theme were school days, then a long narrow block could be a ruler. The four small blocks could be letters, or an apple. A larger block could be a swing set or stack of books, desk, you get the idea. It can be really fun when you start considering the possibilities.

Block Round Robins

Block Round Robins

In this version, the starter picks a theme and a standard block size. For example, the theme of hearts in 12" finished blocks could be chosen. Each participant then does a 12" block that must somehow include a heart. Depending on the agreement, 1 or 2 blocks could be made by each person. The drawback to this option is the starter doesn't get a completed top at the end, but a stack of blocks. The upside is the starter can place the blocks, and create more to fill in as needed.

Some layout options include:

Blocks set straight with sashing.

Blocks set around a center medallion. The center should be included for the participants to see and get the feel of.

A more free form setting where the starter fills in the area around the blocks.
