Round Robins

I was introduced to a concept at my quilt guild that intrigued me. I got a few friends together, and we are going to try it. It is called Round Robin quilting. Each person in the group starts a quilt, sets some guidelines, and passes it to the next person in the group. The next person then quilts on the quilt with their interpretation of the theme using their own fabrics and a little bit of fabric the starter included for others to use. By including some fabric for everyone to use, (maybe a yard to be shared) each addition will have a tie-in to the start of the quilt and will be unified no matter how many people work on it. The quilt goes through everyone in the group, then gets returned to the starter. Each person in the group ends up with a quilt that they started, but others finished.

The fun part is, if you're like me, you are most enthusiastic about a project at the beginning. With this rotation, you don't have too big of a commitment to any one quilt, and you are constantly getting new quilts for you to be creative on. There are a lot of ways to do a Round Robin. The most important thing is that your group agrees on what is expected. The most common format is for the group to agree on the type of Round Robin. As a group you can then set many of the parameters, or choose not to set any. Also, a time frame must be agreed upon by all in the group to complete the rotations. Once rotations have started, it is best to keep the quilts and their progress a secret from the original starter until the end. If you would like input, everyone else in the group is fair game to consult with.

Each month I will post a different way to do a Round Robin. During this time, my group will be doing our Round Robin. When we finish, I will post pictures of what our group came up with. I hope you are inspired to get a group together and give it a try, too. If you do give it a try, I would love to see your pictures. Please post pictures from your group. Did you know most quilt shows have a group quilt category? Just a thought.

Our group just finished our round robin. It was so much fun! The reveal was the best. So many dropped jaws, ooohhs & aahhhs! Our time frame was set at one month per rotation. Most people with kids said they would have preferred 2 months, where those without children at home were fine with one month. Hope this helps in setting up YOUR schedule.
